The Gathering in Gemmayze is a restaurant concept of a trio of old houses in Beirut, central to a garden. You have the choice of the Italian restaurant, the Grill, and the gastronomy bar to enjoy. For this visit I chose the Italian kitchen. The ambiance is cozy and private despite of the close set tables, the bare interior is authentic. The menu has quite a fair selection and the wine list is impressively extensive.
For the starter, we chose Halloumi Maki for 19,000 L.L. which sounds fancier than it is. As you can see it is saj bread with halloum cheese, olives, tomatoes and cucumber, the typical Lebanese breakfast or dinner, and in no way belongs on the menu, especially when it is priced as such.
Next the Linguini With Cepes for 29,900 L.L. with fresh cream and wild mushrooms. It is deceptively small but really filling and delicious, a fine pasta indeed.
Then The Gathering Double Burger for 33,900 L.L. served with fries, melted cheese and simple garnish. The meat is delicious, juicy and resembles a steak in taste, it is in another league of burgers.
Finally the Caramel Fondant for 16,200 L.L. with fine vanilla ice cream, is good to try for a change, since fondant is usually chocolate. Order this only if you have a major sweet tooth and can handle the sweetness of the caramel.
Soft drinks and local beer range from 6,000 L.L. to 9,000 L.L, and as I mentioned before, the wine list is literally a book, so no matter what your taste is, you will definitely find something to suit your taste.
Final verdict: Thumbs up for The Gathering concept, for the low key vibe, for the haven inside the busy city. I definitely recommend it especially for a romantic date. You will be really impressed with the yummy food but steer clear of that sorry excuse for an appetizer!
